Two Storey Extension
Brief
The clients wanted to create an open plan living area comprising of a kitchen, diner and snug. The space had to feel as open and light as possible and be connected to their outdoor living areas, as they wanted a space to socialise with friends in all weathers. Upstairs they wanted to create an independent living space for their teenager which would encompass a large bedroom with en suite and dressing area, while still maintaining a separate upstairs bathroom for when guests stayed.
Design
The main driver on the ground level for this proposal, was the open plan living. By demolishing the existing conservatory and previous kitchen extension, and inserting structural steel beams within the floor void, we were able to open up the space creating plenty of room for the desired kitchen, diner and snug. On any project light is key. We inserted three large roof lights which will illuminate the space throughout the day as the sun moves around the property. At night these roof lights will be uplit creating a spectacular night time feature. The use of bifold doors to the back of the property connects the garden to their internal living space, allowing them to easily flow between to two spaces.
Upstairs we moved the existing family bathroom into the smallest bedroom which was no longer required and extended the bedroom out over the new downstairs extension to create a bedroom with an en suite and dressing area. When extending a property it is important to consider the existing structure and here we have used contrasting but sympathetic materials which creates a harmony between the new extension and host dwelling.
Good post. I learn something new and challenging on blogs I stumbleupon on a daily basis. Its always useful to read content from other writers and use a little something from their sites.
